Afternoon tea, that most quintessential of English customs, has been around for almost 200 years.

It was introduced in England by Anna Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The evening meal in her household was served at eight o’clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake be brought to her room mid-afternoon. This became a regular event and she began inviting friends to join her.

Soon, all upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between 4pm and 7pm.

At Seckford, we have kept to the traditional approach with homemade scones, cakes and indulgent clotted cream and preserves. All this is complemented by a wide selection of Brodies Pyramid loose leaf range of teas and infusions.

However, our Afternoon Tea is served slightly earlier than tradition, between 2pm and 6pm.
